OF DIVINE INSTRUCTIONS
DAILY DEVOTION
Today’s Bible Reading: 2 Kings 14 – 15, 2 Chronicles 25 – 26, Jonah 1 – 4
Jonah 1:1-3 [KJV]; Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Every instruction of God comes with a degree of His presence. His presence is what gives us the grace and ability to do what He instructs us to.
In our theme scripture, the Bible reveals that Jonah received an instruction from God to go to Nineveh. Because Jonah did not want to perform this instruction, he fled.
In fleeing, he did not merely flee from God but from His presence because that instruction came with a degree of the Lord’s presence.
It is no wonder that every time men move in the opposite direction of divine instruction, they struggle, suffer frustration and sometimes even die.
Samson grew up with the divine instruction never to cut off his hair because it was the source of his strength (Judges 16:17). His obedience to this instruction was the basis of the presence of God that functioned in his life. When He disobeyed, the Bible says in Judges 16:20, that the Lord departed from Him.
As a new Testament believer, you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). The presence of God can never depart from you. However, every time you disobey divine instruction, you frustrate the function of the Holy Spirit and His presence in your life.
Ask yourself the question, “How seriously do you take divine instruction?” It may come through a dream, a conviction or from a spiritual authority. Do you merely brush it off?
No matter how seemingly minor the instruction may be, discipline yourself to diligently and quickly respond. As you do, you will continually be positioned for success.
