UNDERSTANDING HOW TO DRINK
DAILY DEVOTION
Today’s Bible Reading: Judges 8 – 9
Judges 7:5–7 (AMP): So he brought the people down to the water, and the Lord said to Gideon, “You shall separate everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog laps, as well as everyone who kneels down to drink.” Now the number of those who lapped [the water], putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men, but all the rest of the people kneeled down to drink water. And the Lord told Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped I will rescue you, and will hand over the Midianites to you. Let all the other people go, each man to his home.”
In the story of Gideon, God did not merely reduce Israel’s army to demonstrate His power. He used water—symbolic of the Word—to test them. The way a man “drinks” is a revelation of how he handles truth.
Drinking, in this context, reveals the posture of the heart toward the Word of God. Some ‘kneel’ without discernment, others “lap” with intent and understanding.
In the New Testament, the test remains: How do you “drink”? There are men who deal with the Word in reverence, with stewardship, and faithfulness – that is your 300. These are the men and women God uses to turn the tide of history.
Today, God still separates men by how they receive the Word. He seeks those who will handle the Word with diligence, who can be trusted with truth, who can pass it on (2 Timothy 2:2). He proves them (1 Timothy 3:10), sanctifies them (Ephesians 5:26), and positions them as pillars (Galatians 2:9) in His Kingdom.
Similarly, in your journey of purpose, don’t just surround yourself with numbers (like the thousands previously appointed to fight alongside Gideon)—surround yourself with faithful men and women who know how to receive the word with all diligence. And above all, be one of them. Hallelujah!

🙌PRAYER: Loving Father, thank You for this wisdom. You teach me to be a faithful steward of Your Word, to ‘drink’ with understanding, to receive with reverence, and to respond with faith. May I not only walk in revelation but also recognise those who are faithful stewards of the mysteries and align myself with them. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
