OF FINDING A MARRIAGE MATE I
Genesis 28:6 KJV When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;
Why were Isaac’s parents concerned about his choice of wife? Abraham had the same concern for Isaac. What deeper truth lies behind this?
The deeper truth is that marriage is designed and directed by God. Only God joins a man and a woman as one flesh. This is not simply a human institution, but a divine pattern that mirrors God’s relationship with the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33).
Only God truly knows whom each person should marry. Many today choose marriage for reasons apart from God’s guidance, such as envy, attraction, finances, or social pressure. However, marriage can only be sustained by the Wisdom that began it: God’s Wisdom.
The frustrations we see in marriages today often arise when spouses attempt to run a God-designed institution using human-wisdom. Do not seek to add to or subtract from the Wisdom of God. Any attempt to insert human reasoning, such as taking multiple spouses, or to disregard divine instruction, such as dismissing the need for vows, inevitably leads to frustration. As Jesus said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted” (Matthew 15:13).
If you are to get married, marry for God, not for yourself, not for your peers, parents, siblings, or any other reason outside God’s direction.
