TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
Genesis 1:26–28 MSG God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.” God created human beings; he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature. He created them male and female. God blessed them: “Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.”
Genesis 1:1 describes God’s original, perfect creation. However, Genesis 1:2 presents the earth in a ruined and chaotic state, pointing to the aftermath of a catastrophic event. This is commonly understood as the period when satan rebelled and was cast down to the earth (Isaiah 14:12–15; Ezekiel 28:12–17).
God later restored the earth, created man, and entrusted him with responsibility over the whole of creation. Psalm 82:1–8 reveals that man was created to judge on earth on God’s behalf. Therefore, when things are out of order, responsibility rests with man to correct them.
When a man does not understand responsibility—like Adam—he becomes prone to blame-shifting and making excuses. This same pattern is evident today: when a marriage is failing, spouses blame one another; parents blame their children; youths blame the government; and many have been deceived by satan to blame God.
When something goes wrong, a man who does not understand responsibility looks outward, but a man who understands responsibility looks inward.
God has already given us all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). If He did not spare His own Son, what has He not given us? (Romans 8:32). Our responsibility, therefore, is faithfulness.
If things are failing, it is your responsibility to fix them and restore order. When the earth is out of course, the fault lies with the ruler. Look inward. Understand the position God has placed you in, and take action to restore your marriage, your children, your job, and your life. For example, in Genesis 2:22–23, God gave Adam a woman (small “w”), but it was Adam’s responsibility to raise her into a Woman (capital “W”).
